Granlibakken does not count to me as it is just 1 10 acre, 300 vt/ft run with a tow & bar

Yikes. As far as the ones I've been to (Alpine, Heavenly, Kirkwood, Rose, Northstar, Sierra-at-T, Squaw), your assessment is spot on.

I'd only add that Squaw is not the best place for a variety of intermediate skiing. Essentially, there is one ridge and that is it. There is advanced/expert terrain galore, though.

Bob, the politicians lack savvy by factoring threats into their decision-making. Once the threateners know that their threats will be rewarded, do you suppose there will be more threats or less? Pretty obvious to you and me, but apparently not to the politicians. As to the bluff aspect, closing June Mountain would devalue the Rodeo Grounds land so MMSA would be harming itself (Intrawest still owns 15% of MMSA).

If June Lakes doesn't approve development of a village on the Rodeo Grounds then how much value does it really have?

My feeling is that June Mtn is in danger of being closed if development doesn't support and pay for additional investment in the mountain. The profit they make in good years isn't enough to pay for the millions of dollars in new lifts, improvements, etc. necessary to continue to run. Mammoth would be better off investing that money in Mammoth instead of June if the development of the Rodeo Grounds is not approved.

The prophecy has been fulfilled

The truth is that the June Citizens committee had approved a build and MSSA/Starwood backed out. I won't comment on this again.

Did the June Citizens Committee approve a development with the number of beds MMSA said was necessary in order to fund investment in June Mtn? I think you're being disengenuous OGT. Simply approving development of something on the Rodeo Grounds is NOT the same as approving the development that MMSA proposed.

Of course after 2006 the RE market crashed and made development of the Rodeo Grounds significantly less attractive and possibly not even an option.

It's crystal clear that many June Lake residents were strongly against the proposed development of the Rodeo Grounds.

I don't think they could have made it any more clear.

Now they won't have to worry about any tall buildings being built or light pollution impact their dark sky. Maybe closing June Mtn should be seen as a win for the residents.

After all they were the June Lake Advocates:

June Lake Advocates position:
As you are aware, height is a major contentious
issue with 91% of the residents and home
owners surveyed who insist that buildings be
limited to 35ʼ as has been the precedent in the
June Lake area.
http://www.junelakeadvocates.com/news/JLAnewsv2n1.pdf

In the last week, the June Lake Advocates has communicated responses and concerns over the June Lake Rodeo Grounds Proposed Specific Plan Environmental Scoping to area agencies. Three letters have been published in this blog space for you to review. They may be downloaded as pdf documents. They are:
1.Official response by the JLA to the environmental scoping. (PDF LINK)
2.Secondary concerns and response. (PDF LINK)
3.Letter to the USFS (Forest Service) identifying environmental concerns over water resources. (PDF LINK)
In summary, the Plan appears to ignore and violate the Mono County General Plan, the June Lake 2010 Area Plan and the June Lake Design Guidelines, and claims precedence over the General Plan. At this time, we are very concerned about the preservation of the scenic and environmental health of the June Lake Loop.

So there you go. Just like I've said all along. The town was willing to work with Starwood and then they (Starwood) backed out.

How long after Starwood proposed the development was the recommendation finally approved?

You can kill a project simply by dragging it out which is apparently what happened in this case. It becomes too expensive to continue trying to receive approval to make the project economically feasible.

I agree that it got dragged out way too long.

I've been on the fence since I retired up here. I listen to all sides...

Who is "the town"? I can see several types of individuals thre from the published opinions. Some want no development at Rodeo Grounds at all, or at the most low-density continuation of June Lake style 1-2 story detached structures. Some want June Mt. to stay open as a ski area and are willing to support any Rodeo Grounds development that will help that happen. Some business owners may not want to see the dropoff in winter business if June Mt. closes (which is trivial compared to the summer business), others may see their business threatened if a new moderate-to-luxury hotel opens with direct access to the mountain.

The Rodeo Grounds project SUCKED, let's hope it never gets off the ground EVER.

June could turn a profit, try marketing it for once!

PS you have a mass amount of people in Carson City who would love the slower pace of June over Tahoe resorts.
