I could see the motivation for staying open later than the 4th just for the publicity and to contrast with the Epic pass. Haven't Kirkwood/Heavenly/Northstar been closed since mid-April?

Rusty's town meeting yesterday seemed to confirm staying open through November

The bottom line is that the race camps are what pay the bills to keep the mountain open other than Memorial and July 4 holiday weekends.

So when the patrollers says the race camps are here into August (and I had read that rumor elsewhere earlier), I base my opinion on that.

I also have pics from end of July 2011 and my own pics from Aug. 31/Sep. 1, 2011 when I used AT gear to ski 12 consecutive months at Mammoth. I can see from those pics that lift served skiing would have been viable at end of July but not even close at end of August.

Is there a deeper snowpack than in 2011? Yes up top but not sure it's that much more at McCoy Station/base of 3, which is matters for lift served skiing. This plus the race camp scheduling makes me believe the lifts will spin into August but not into September.

Footnote: A lot of Tahoe diehards ski mammoth late spring into summer. If squaw opens yr round I'm sure this will impact tkt sales for mammoth, vice versa.

Shirley Lake 7,500 - 8,200 doesn't have a snowball's chance in August of outlasting Mammoth above McCoy Station 9,600 - 11,000. Squaw has already admitted that past July 4, snow-farmed Shirley Lake is all that will be skiable. Squaw will be weekends only after June 4, and my guess is it will be reduced to just Shirley Lake before July 4. This is not even close to being competitive with the terrain quantity and quality (plus daily vs. weekend only) of skiing Mammoth will have this summer.

Also, they are only skiing weekends after Memorial and only Saturdays after July 4 weekend.

Again, we are way ahead of them no matter how late we stay open.

Race Camps into mid August and then it's a week by week decision.... stay tuned, I am sure that will change

Tons more water content then 2011 so I would not base anything off of that season.

Back to Spring skiing in a couple days!

Question. Is MMSA obligated to stop running Chair 11 at some point so the road to Minaret can be plowed or is it up to the road to wait on MM? I was just looking on the cams and there is still a ton of snow at the parking lot level. Usually I see the road being plowed when it gets down to 2 feet or less. I have xc skied on that road on June 8 before.

I'm assuming that MMSA must cease ops of Chair 11 when Caltrans says it's time to start plowing the road to the Vista and down into Reds. It's going to be a while this year.

Major work is going to be done to repair the Reds Road in the future, probably starting in spring of 2018. Info on that project is here:

August!?

http://localfreshies.com/is-the-snow-st ... -+Snowlife

Quote:
For those that didn’t hear Mammoth Mountain just announced that they will be open until August for the 2016-17 season. Earlier Squaw Valley reported they would have skiing and riding through August as well! The question that comes up immediately “is snow even good this late in the season?” Answer…absolutely! It’s pretty much a guarantee that the snow will be good.

The only sentence not true in this story is the one about the mountain bike park being open.

^ Haven't seen anything on their home page or their news site. Wondering where that online publication got their info? :? :mm:

Huge incentive to keep the race camps and half pipes/slope style going with the upcoming Winter Olympics

They probably made an assumption based off of Rusty's video posted a few days ago

We shall see, it's hotter than hell down here in SoCal

I've heard something about staying open until Dave's birthday in August. Sounds plausible.

When do the race camps end?

Dave turns 102 on August 24th so that would be very cool if they can stay open until then and have a massive closing day celebration in honor of Dave.
