So is this REALLY counted as first snow of the season? It's going to be all gone when things kick off sometime in Oct / Nov.

Actually between mid-November and March, very little at Mammoth. That's Mammoth's key competitive virtue, great snow preservation.

But yes, October snow usually melts out, unless there's lot of it as in 2004. In September it's more like always, surely 99+%.

There's plenty of snow from the Sept storm that still hasn't melted. There's even snow along the side of the road by Minaret Summit.
