Skied a few days last week. Was lining up around 8:20 at Chr. 10, with a group of 3 others. Next thing I know the liftie is bringing over his shovel with a pile of snow in it and a piece of orange (the fruit) debris on top. He says to the guy in front of me...did you just throw this? Guy in front of me cops to it and the liftie tells him there is a trash can he can go put it in. Guy takes it and puts it in the trash. Well, that was that, no way he was going to open up early (as 2 was already taking riders). Headed over to 2....when we made it back to 10 a bit later told the liftie how well he handled it! Please don't trash the mountain. Was glad to see him hold this guy accountable. Props

It's not the same thing Shifty. If you had kids you'd understand.

Most birds understand peels, twigs, peanut shells, etc are nest materials. Better there than a landfill.

Some things biodegrade. I'm a dad, and the orange peel thing doesn't bother me much. Maybe he shoulda been more subtle, or maybe he threw it at somebody, but in and of itself, orange peel is about the nicest litter I can think of. Right next to panties on a tree

Where do you stand on empty PBR cans scattered about on the ground?
The orange is biodegradable. edit: Jbay said that already.

Was the litter bug a snowboarder? Figures.

Cmon. Yes, orange peels are biodegradable and is not a problem on the soil out of sight, but peels on the snow is not going to wither away soon and is unsightly.

just because you can throw something on the ground because it is biodegradable doesn't mean you should.
the liftie did a great thing.
or maybe the guy was just so lazy he couldn't be bothered to throw it in the trash?

That doesn't even make sense! Birds don't use food scraps as nesting materials. If you're saying that the orange peels will decompose then, no, in fact they are better off in the landfill. You do know how composting works, right?

That's beside the point though. It's not the trash the liftie was trying to eliminate, it's the littering. The first guy drops an orange peel, the next guy drops a peanut shell, the next guy sees a pile of trash and throws down a candy wrapper etc. Next thing you know the place looks like Mtn. High.

I'm telling you, if you toss an orange peel in your front yard as you back outta the garage it'll be gone by the time you get back home. A bird will have picked it up and flown away. Try it, you'll see.

I bet a plastic bag left in your yard would be gone too. But if it just gets deposited somewhere else (by wind or by bird), is it really gone?

I love the way these threads can go from trash to birds nest.

It's not trash.

Who cares where the bird takes it? They got birds in the jungle now, too, where fruit trees were invented.
