I know the basin just "opened" but I have to believe the snow is still impacting even the lower elevation hiking trails. Is there a good place to check status around town? Paging SL? ;-)

You assume correctly!

Probably the best place for current higher elevation trail conditions information would be to call the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center at (760) 924-5500. They are open daily from 8-5.

This was Sunday for a quick peak, Lake George. We didn't do any high trails this trip, heavy H2O runoff and snow.
Just using the town's trail to do a quick 4-5 miles before breakfast was soo nice. Was like the AC was on outside...
The sound of water running everywhere, my perspective depending on where you are.

Thanks for the pic post. Nice! I'm wondering if McCloud Lake trail is melted off, or if access to Horseshoe is even possible. Also Parker Lake Trail in June. I've seen some pics from Horsetail Falls on the Rush Creek trail over there that look amazing.

The TH Placard at George had black plastic wrapped around it; the one going to Barrett and TJ.
We just did little hikes we haven't done in 15 years; Convict and trails around the Inyo Craters.
Good view and sounds from the power plant below Horsetail.
Yes Coldwater was exactly that and alot of it coming down. Snow drifties at entrance which was closed.
Old Mammoth road is closed. Not alot of through traffic.. Is that Stamp Mill really all that hazardous?
Mammoth Creek was really bustling ..on both sides of the 395 and in town.
The bike shuttle is not running yet to Lakes Basin still snow and debris on parts of bike path.
Just bring your repellent- mosquitoes etc. Amazon is my friend with all the non DEET stuff now.

SL's advice is very good indeed. Who knows what the trail conditions are like in a week with these temps.
Maybe Snowman's site might have some current info as well.
Have Fun and Enjoy.

This didn't fit anywhere else...update on roads and campgrounds for the Fall.

Update: Inyo National Forest readies for closures

The road will close for the winter at the Minaret Vista Gate on Sunday, October 29 at noon. The Reds Meadow area is popular with winter recreationalists and Mammoth Mountain Ski Area provides a variety of winter recreation activities under their permit with the Inyo National Forest.

And the winners of the "don't bother reading the signs, or reading the local papers, or listening to local news" award are the folks in three vehicles who all called 9-1-1 about a half hour ago because they were locked BEHIND the closed gate.

Oy!

Good thing the USFS gives the MLPD spare keys to the gate. They let those knuckleheads out.
