HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY STATUS REPORT
U.S. Geological Survey
Sunday, June 10, 2018, 10:26 PM HST (Monday, June 11, 2018, 08:26 UTC)

Kīlauea Volcano Lower East Rift Zone

Vigorous eruption of lava continues from the lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) fissure system in the area of Leilani Estates.

The three closely spaced lava fountains at Fissure 8 are erupting with maximum heights reaching 150-180 feet. Lava continues to be fed into the channelized flow trending north and then east to the ocean entry at Kapoho. Very minor spillovers are occurring at multiple places along the channel but have uniformly been short lived and are not threatening areas that were not previously covered by lava. Gas emissions from the fissure eruption continue to be very high. The late afternoon overflight noted a vigorous plume rising from the ocean entry with minor steam explosions at the leading edge.

Minor incandescence and lava activity at Fissures 16/18 is continuing but not feeding significant flows. No other fissure is showing activity at this time.

Kīlauea Volcano Summit

There have been no ash emissions since early this morning; however, seismicity at the summit is increasing. If the pattern observed before previous explosions persists, we expect another event in the next few hours. Inward slumping of the rim and walls of Halema`uma`u continues in response to ongoing subsidence at the summit.

If the lava somehow starts diverting to that northern lobe it will be heading down to another coastal community.

Wondering how bad the Pele's Hair the @NWSHonolulu keeps issuing a Special Weather Statement on? Here's a shot Maire Howell shared today from the swimming pool in Pahoa, HI. This airborne volcanic glass is like fiberglass. #KilaueaEruption

HVO posted this animated gif from the webcam shots of the crater. If you watch the right hand side you can see the floor sinking!

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY STATUS REPORT
U.S. Geological Survey
Tuesday, June 12, 2018, 4:12 PM HST (Wednesday, June 13, 2018, 02:12 UTC)

Kīlauea Volcano Lower East Rift Zone

Eruption of lava continues from the lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) fissure system in the area of Leilani Estates.

A line of closely spaced vents at Fissure 8 are continuing to erupt producing fountains encircled by a 115-ft spatter cone. This activity continues to feed the fast moving channelized flow that is entering the ocean at Kapoho. Weak lava activity continues at Fissures 16/18 as has been noted for the last several days. Incandescence was noted at Fissures 15 and 22. Lava was entering the ocean over a broader length this morning with several minor incandescent points and small plumes and two larger entries and corresponding plumes. The upwelling areas were also more dispersed than yesterday.

So now 15 and 22 are showing signs of life again too.

This is crazy. I remember standing at the Overlook in 1991 close enough that I could toss an Oreo in as my sacrifice. Look at those cracks in the parking lot. Its going to fall in soon.

Image

Events at the summit of Kīlauea over the past few weeks have dramatically reshaped Halema‘uma‘u, shown here in this aerial view, which looks west across the crater. The obvious flat surface (photo center) is the former Halema‘uma‘u crater floor, which has subsided at least 100 m (about 300 ft) during the past couple weeks. Ground cracks circumferential to the crater rim can be seen cutting across the parking lot (left) for the former Halema‘uma‘u visitor overlook (closed since 2008). The deepest part of Halema‘uma‘u (foreground) is now about 300 m (1,000 ft) below the crater rim. The Halema‘uma‘u crater rim and walls continue to slump inward and downward with ongoing subsidence at Kīlauea's summit.

June 5 almost the same view. That crack that ran thru the parking lot is now about to cleave off.

@USGSVolcanoes

Kīlauea Message Tue, 12 Jun 2018 17:29:57 HST: HVO field crew detect temperatures as high as 430 deg C (806 deg F) in a non-erupting crack in the Lower East Rift Zone.

@USGSVolcanoes

This is part of the fissure 10 crack system, and not a new fissure. It could indicate that fissure 10 will reactivate, but it is not a guarantee.

@USGSVolcanoes
1h
It means the possibility exists. Increasing temperatures and higher gas emissions do indicate that magma is getting shallower in that area. However, it's no guarantee that fissure 10 will erupt again.

In answer to the oft asked, "How much lava is coming out?" question.

#Number time. #Fissure8 #lava effusion rate estimates indicate ~100 cubic m/sec. OR...
~26,000 US gallons/sec
~12 commercial dump trucks/sec

Or...
Enough lava to build the Hoover dam (out of lava instead of concrete) every 5.6 days

^^ I think its also astounding that after traveling 8 miles, its still so hot!

I still dont trust the channel the lava is in, it seems like it could break at any time. I dont know if there is a ridge in the way but if I were in that community to the north of the flow I'd be feeling nervous.

This eruption has had it all! Pele's hair, lava fountains, earthquakes, explosions, added coastline, collapsing craters, entire communities destroyed, attempted murder, and now this;

I dont know if this is anything, but the live cam is showing a lot of steaming on the edges of the crater and not a big puff from the explosion vent itself. Maybe something is going to crack off today.

On the latest drone footage there is steam showing up way off from the crater on the caldera floor.

Ooh a human hard hat in view.
