**CORRECTION**

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ ... 001xgp.php

Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit Japan early Friday, triggering tsunami warnings and sending people fleeing out of buildings in the capital.

The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and into waters underneath. In Tokyo, crowds huddled together and tried to reach relatives via cell phone.

Its epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) from Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said.

That tsunami surge video was really something! I expect a tsunami watch to be issued for the West Coast sometime overnight.

The video coming is amazing. What a huge quake!

The quake expert on the local news down HErE made an interesting comment that I hadn't heard before - the ground acceleration during the Christchurch quake reached 2g's. That means people were actually thrown up in the air. He said that many of the buildings damaged in the quake were built to code and that California would experience similar damage with that ground acceleration.

The quake expert said he expects the tsunami to be a few inches to maybe a foot when it reaches SoCal due to the distance and the off shore islands.

Tsunamis tend to be higher near Crescent City and the Central Coast.

My cousins and I were just talking about natural hazards on Sunday. What does everyone do out here when a tsunami warning is issued? Head as close to the water so you can see it!!!

The USGS site is showing it as an 8.9. Of course that still may be revised.

CNN has incredible video of the flooding and the fires at what looks like an natural gas facility or oil refinery.

A 7.1 "aftershock". Amazing.

TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 3
NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI

TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII

SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WARNING

A TSUNAMI WARNING IS ISSUED FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII EFFECTIVE AT
0931 PM HST.

COORDINATES - 38.2 NORTH 142.5 EAST
LOCATION - NEAR EAST COAST OF HONSHU JAPAN
MAGNITUDE - 8.8 MOMENT

MEASUREMENTS OR REPORTS OF TSUNAMI WAVE ACTIVITY

GAUGE LOCATION LAT LON TIME AMPL PER
------------------- ----- ------ ----- --------------- -----
DART 21413 30.5N 152.1E 0659Z 0.76M / 2.5FT 32MIN
HANASAKI HOKKAIDO J 43.3N 145.6E 0657Z 2.79M / 9.2FT 76MIN

LAT - LATITUDE (N-NORTH, S-SOUTH)
LON - LONGITUDE (E-EAST, W-WEST)
TIME - TIME OF THE MEASUREMENT (Z IS UTC IS GREENWICH TIME)
AMPL - TSUNAMI AMPLITUDE MEASURED RELATIVE TO NORMAL SEA LEVEL.
IT IS ...NOT... CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT.
VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER - PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

NOTE - DART MEASUREMENTS ARE FROM THE DEEP OCEAN AND THEY
ARE GENERALLY MUCH SMALLER THAN WOULD BE COASTAL
MEASUREMENTS AT SIMILAR LOCATIONS.

EVALUATION

A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.

THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS

0259 AM HST FRI 11 MAR 2011

MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.

This is an interesting observation from the USGS in their event summary. I happened to notice the earlier quakes because Peek's pager was going off then and I found out why for her.

Quote:
The March 11 earthquake was preceded by a series of large foreshocks over the previous two days, beginning on March 9th with an M 7.2 event approximately 40 km from the March 11 earthquake, and continuing with a further 3 earthquakes greater than M 6 on the same day.

Those quakes actually generated a small tsunami then. The strain must have been incredible to be causing the foreshocks.

Woah. Just woke up from a nap & and saw this news on my home page.

Check out THIS video. Unbelievable footage. Almost like a disaster movie, but it's real. Very sad for Japan.

Pretty shocking...

Tsunami footage from heli overhead as it happened

The debris the surge is carrying along is on fire!

Yeah, i noticed that as well. Lots to burn in that wash I guess.

At least the nuke plants shut down and no radioactive leaks being reported.

8.9 is just a frickin huge quake. If that ever hit Southern California in a major urban area it would probably be horrific, with thousands dead. Many of the freeway overpasses would collapse, buildings would be heavily damaged, trains would derail, and fires would burn like crazy. Not to mention the tsunami at the local beaches..

I/we better get ALL my/our emergency supplies ready to go before the San Andreas breaks loose with an 8.0 or greater..

First New Zealand, now Japan. Where next??

I got this from NHK's site. I understand several tsunami waves have been hitting Japan since the initial one.

Quote:
Japan's Meteorological Agency has issued a major tsunami alert for Pacific coastal areas from Hokkaido to Chiba prefectures, spanning a large area of the country's main island.

The agency says tsunami waves higher than 10 meters could hit Miyagi and Iwate prefectures.

Waves ranging from 3 to 10 meters are forecast for nearby prefectures including Ibaraki and Chiba, which are close to Tokyo.

At 3:21 PM, a 4.1-meter-high tsunami was recorded in Kamaishi, and a 4-meter-high tsunami was recorded at Miyako Port, both in Iwate Prefecture.

We dont have a subduction zone off SoCal so I wouldnt worry about a local tsunami too much. WA and OR however....

Run on water at the supermarket tomorrow.
