TOKYO — Infants in Tokyo and surrounding areas should not drink tap water, a Tokyo official said Wednesday, after radioactive iodine from a crippled nuclear power plant was detected in the capital’s water supply.

Ei Yoshida, head of water purification for the Tokyo water department, made the announcement at a televised news conference. He said iodine-131 had been detected in water samples at a level of 210 becquerels. The recommended limit for infants is 100 becquerels.

For adults, the recommended limit is 300 becquerels.

The Health Ministry said in a statement that it was unlikely that there would be negative consequences to infants who did drink the water, but said it should be avoided if possible and that it should not be used to make infant formula.

The warning applies to the 23 wards of Tokyo, as well as the towns of Mitaka, Tama, Musashino, Machida and Inagi to the west of the city.

I'm surprised its showing up so far away, frankly.

Uh oh

NY Times wrote:
TOKYO — Japan’s effort to contain the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant suffered a setback, an official said on Friday, citing evidence that the reactor vessel of the No. 3 unit may have been damaged.

The development, described at a news conference by Hidehiko Nishiyama, deputy director-general of the Japan Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, raises the possibility that radiation from the mox fuel in the reactor — a combination of uranium and plutonium — could be released.

One sign that a breach may have occurred in the reactor vessel, Mr. Nishiyama said, took place on Thursday when three workers who were trying to connect an electrical cable to a pump in a turbine building next to the reactor were injured when they stepped into water that was found to be significantly more radioactive than normal in a reactor. The No. 3 unit, the only one of the six reactors at the site that uses the mox fuel, was damaged by a hydrogen explosion on March 14. Workers have been seeking to keep it cool by spraying it with seawater along with a more recent effort to restart the reactor’s cooling system.

Mr. Edano said the three injured workers at Reactor No. 3 had sustained radiation burns to their legs while dragging an electrical cable through contaminated water in an effort to restore the crucial pump. The workers were burned as contaminated water poured over the tops of their boots, soaking their feet and ankles, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported, citing sources with the Tokyo Electric Power Company, the plant’s operator.

Two workers were taken to Fukushima Medical University Hospital and were expected to be transferred to the National Institute of Radiological Sciences in Chiba City. Hiro Hasegawa, a Tokyo Electric spokesman, said the third worker had not been hospitalized.

Becquerels? Jeez ... it's hard just making sense of the units in this tragedy. :(

Its incredible how powerful water can be. I think people forget how heavy it is when they pooh pooh the tsunami wave heights that made it to CA. That water can move a lot of big things like it was nothing.

The tsunami was estimated to be 30 feet high in places. At 33 feet water pressure is 2 atmospheres. Yeah, it weighs a lot and has incredible destructive force.

From AP via LA Times:

Quote:
SENDAI, Japan— The radioactivity in water in one unit of a hobbled nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan has tested 10 million times higher than normal, the plant's operator said Sunday.

Leaked water in Unit 2 of the Fukushima Daiichi plant measured 10 million times higher than usual radioactivity levels when the reactor is operating normally, Tokyo Electric Power Co. spokesman Takashi Kurita told reporters in Tokyo.

Radioactivity in the air in Unit 2 measured at 1,000 millisieverts per hour -- four times higher than the occupational limit of 250 millisieverts set by the government, he said.

The readings came as workers grappled with how to remove and store the highly radioactive water pooling in four troubled units at the plant.

The discovery of puddles with radiation levels 10,000 times the norm sparked a temporary evacuation of the plant on Thursday. Two workers who stepped into the water were hospitalized with possible burns.

The development set back feverish efforts to start up a crucial cooling system knocked out in a massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami, but has helped experts get closer to determining the source of the dangerous leak.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano, speaking Sunday on TV talk shows, said the radioactive water is "almost certainly" seeping from a reactor core.

On Saturday, the utility admitted that it had failed to adequately warn workers about dangerous radioactive water at the plant.

Isnt this really bad?

Yeah, that's almost the worst case scenario. Not only is the core leaking, or pipes connecting to it, but it has a more lethal form of nuclear fuel.

This is really bad and make it much harder for workers to get in there and attempt to make repairs.

I saw on tv today that the company admitted that workers that got burned were not outfitted with proper protective gear and that the boots they were wearing only came up to their ankles. That's just inexcusable. They should be outfitted with the best protective gear available!!!

And where is that radioactive water going to go anyway? This is the problem I have with nuclear energy, no one has a solution for the waste except "Duh, we'll bury it in someone else's area and let our grandchildren figure it out".

Actually there is a solution - reprocessing. But the US outlaws reprocessing of fuel because it can be turned into fuel for nuclear weapons apparently. So the solution is there, or at least a partial solution, but we don't allow it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_reprocessing

New reactors are MUCH safer. The future seems to be Pebble Bed Reactors.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pebble_bed_reactor

But there are other competing technologies in what is called Generation IV reactors.

"Oops, we made a mistake"

Quote:
AP

The apology came after employees fled the complex's Unit 2 reactor when a reading showed radiation levels had reached 10 million times higher than normal in the reactor's cooling system. Officials said they were so high that the worker taking the measurements had withdrawn before taking a second reading.

On Sunday night, though, plant operators said that while the water was contaminated with radiation, the extremely high reading was a mistake.

"The number is not credible," said Tokyo Electric Power Co. spokesman Takashi Kurita. "We are very sorry."
He said officials were taking another sample to get accurate levels, but did not know when the results would be announced.

Another quake? Or was it an after shock after the aftershock,....Jeez it does not let up for our friends across the water.

I heard that they issued another tsunami warning, hoping it does not come to pass.

They ended up with an 18" tsunami, so I hear. It was a 6.5 quake. That seems so miniscule compared to the big shaker.
