Classic fall day super clean taken via phone around 2:30pm today near the main life guard station in HB.

Sunset to the west and moonrise to the east (obviously out of picture). To have both in my line of sight while out surfing my 5-8 in 66 degree water…just amazing. Mainly Mid period NW and 5-6 seconds windswell provided sets up to chest high plus on the best sets with fair to good shape.

Sad story out of the North Shore where a Carlsbad local went missing in very large surf yesterday and is presumed drown. He was a friend of some friends and they are understandably devastated.

RIP

I'm on Kauai right now, and the locals are all saying they're surprised there was only one victim. There were 3 surfer in distress calls that day (2 on Oahu, one on Kauai where the NE is much bigger) but the other guys got the help they needed. Witnesses say the Carlsbad guy was charging, but took a fall and broke his board on a cleanup set wave.

RIP.

On a brighter note, I got to watch Laird Hamilton tow in 35+ foot faces on his hydrofoil on Wednesday, amongst several other tow in teams. It was tow in only that day save for Kalihiwai, where it looked like Rincon on a crowded day since it was the only paddle in spot working on the North Shore.

Unbelievable final day at Pipe. Mick Fanning getting 2 God sent waves to come from behind 2 heats in a row to win the world title. Kelly dominating the semis and then squeaking through to beat Jon Florence in the final.

I put some awesome burgers on the Q and PG and I watched the show unfold on the internet all day. What a better way to spend the day than watching a world class contest with a world class surf photographer.

Thanks for spending the day with me PG. And thanks for the awesome IPA.

Better than summer surf forecast for SoCal:

ORANGE COUNTY COASTAL AREAS-SAN DIEGO COUNTY COASTAL AREAS-
346 PM PST SAT JAN 18 2014

...BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 2 AM PST SUNDAY
THROUGH LATE TUESDAY NIGHT...

* WAVES AND SURF...BUILDING TO 4 TO 6 FEET ON SUNDAY...THEN 5 TO
8 FEET WITH OCCASIONAL SETS OF 10 FEET MONDAY AND TUESDAY.
SURF MAY LOWER SLIGHTLY TO AROUND 4 TO 7 FEET LATE WEDNESDAY
INTO THURSDAY AS THE SECOND SWELL SLOWLY LOWERS. HOWEVER...
SURF SHOULD RISE AGAIN BY FRIDAY AS ANOTHER LARGE
WEST-NORTHWEST SWELL MOVES IN.

* TIMING...SUNDAY THROUGH AT LEAST EARLY WEDNESDAY.

* LOCATIONS...HIGHEST SURF FOR BEACHES NORTH OF NEWPORT BEACH IN
ORANGE COUNTY AND FOR WEST-FACING BEACHES SOUTH OF CARLSBAD IN
SAN DIEGO COUNTY.

Summer-like weather with a nice winter swell and water temps around San Diego hovering around 60 degrees. I doubt you'll hear many complaints from surfers.
