I honestly don't understand what the USMNT is doing right now. Are they rebuilding? Are they fielding the strongest team possible? I will say this - there are a TOTAL of 4 MLS players on the team, accounting for a TOTAL of 9 caps. If the MLS is supposed to be making the US more relevant in the international scene, well, I think we can see where this is going.

Flat busted and backwards.
Hey maybe Wayne Rooney will make MLS some money where Ibrah lacks. I mean contribute to the legitimacy of the league internationally and draw more US talent.

In other news, WOW - did not see that coming;

Maybe Zidane would be interested in a little project on this side of the pond?

MLS was never about player development, IMO.

If it was, that was a mistake. Having players in the best leagues making regular champions league appearances should be the path and metric for player development

MLS was simply supposed to make the sport viable as a consumer product in a big market

That's why MLS continues to bring in these retreads like Rooney and Ibra

The worst suspicions have been confirmed

It's a retirement league where recognizable players come to make their last buck

I think the US had to commit to a pro league in order to host a world cup, so it is FIFA really trying to open a market of new eyeballs for the World Cup

I don't see professional soccer ever being big here. I'm OK with that, too.

Not sure about that. The most watched sport is NFL but I think with all of the concussion revelations as of late, anyone rational has grown weary of it. I know I haven't been to a game in person in 20 years, and pretty much hated that experience. Fights all through the stadium, a row of kids behind us just absolutely trashing the place - and this was a Packers v. Chargers game. I have only passively watched ever since. If not for the changes that have come to NCAA football thanks to Chip Kelly (can't wait to see what he does @ UCLA), I wouldn't watch that either. There is certainly room for an alternate professional sport in the US if and when the NFL popularity wanes.

MLS OTOH - at least that's a game you can enjoy taking your kids to. It's not the league that those same kids aspire to play in though - that's the Premier league. As long as that is the case, the popularity of the MLS will be limited, as well as the money that goes along with it.

Concur - that's why I asked. Brazil 1, but I would not be surprised at all if Costa, SUI or Serbia make it out 2. Who plays Brazil last? Could be Brazil locks up the 1 seed early and the 2 seed gets through on a tie with Brazil.

I was guilty of not studying my rosters well enough. We will see. It should be competetive.

Now whos the longshot pick?
Mines Nigeria.

Group H is ...err... well balanced. I could see Japan making a run from that group.

I keep reading that the pundits think Iran will finally make it out of pool play this year. Hearing it, not believing it.

Group A - it's good to be the home team. I think Uruguay wins that pool - from there, who knows?

Has anyone set up a pick 'em tournament yet?

Well Spain certainly knows how to bring the drama, don't they?
https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/world-cup/news/world-cup-2018-spain-national-team-coach-fired-two-days-before-teams-debut-in-russia-after-taking-real-madrid-job/

Safe to say there is A LOT more to this story. If they had a game or two with the new coach this might not be that big of a deal, but they open with Portugal. That can't be good.
