#LeilaniEstatesEruption #KilaueaVolcano UPDATE (June 2 at 6 PM):
We just received these photos taken by Aloha Skies Aviation over the Green Lake area earlier today, sometime after 10 AM. We’re releasing them in hopes they will help to provide some information and guidance to those residents who live in the area — many of whom have reached out to us requesting that we post more aerial footage as soon as we’re able to. According to Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense Agency, Hawaiʻi County Fire has flown over the area and believes some homes were overrun by lava in the Green Lake area. However, gas emissions obscured the aerial footage from the fire chopper, so it’s unclear how many or exactly where. We are waiting for the latest update from Civil Defense Agency officials on where the leading edge of the flow front is now.

Image

The steepest line of descent on this map shows the path going right down to the bay thru inhabited areas. Will the flow make it to the sea?

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY STATUS REPORT
U.S. Geological Survey
Saturday, June 2, 2018, 7:39 PM HST (Sunday, June 3, 2018, 05:39 UTC)

Kīlauea Volcano Lower East Rift Zone

Vigorous eruption of lava continues from the lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) fissure system in the area of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens.

Fountaining at Fissure 8 continued unabated during the day, feeding a channelized lava flow to the northeast along Highway 132 that has crossed Highway 137 at the intersection of the two highways at 9:30 AM this morning. The flow continued advancing into Kapoho Crater and Kapoho Beach Lots. At 10 AM, lava entered Green Lake within Kapoho Crater producing a large steam plume. By 1:30 PM the steam plume had ceased and by 3 pm, a Hawaii County Fire Department overflight reported that lava had filled the lake and apparently evaporated all the water. Other branches of the Fissure 8 lava flow were inactive.

The only other lava flow noted by the morning overflight was at Fissure 16, which was weakly active.

Image

As fissure 8 lava flowed into Green Lake, the lake water boiled away, sending a white plume high into the sky—visible from afar between around 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. HST. This aerial photo, taken a couple of hours later by the Hawai‘i County Fire Department, shows still-steaming lava within Green Lake, located near the intersection of Highways 132 and 137.

That part about the lake going bye bye is the kind of thing I would read on a roadside interpretive plaque speculating on what happened millions of years ago that I would think was too fantastical to be true. This eruption is blowing my mind in many ways.

#LeilaniEstatesEruption #KilaueaVolcano UPDATE (June 2 at 9:30 PM):
I just got off the phone with Hawaiʻi Island Senator Kai Kahele who flew over the lower East Rift Zone tonight and shared this aerial video with us. “It was burning homes, it was burning farms, and just laying destruction in its path with a direct line for Vacationland and Kapoho Bay. I would be surprised, if it continues on its current speed, that it hasn’t reached the Kapoho Vacationland shoreline by the time the sun comes up,” said @kaialiikahele. The fountain from fissure 8 has created a large, fast-moving lava flow that inundated the Four Corners intersection at Highway 132 and Highway 137 and is moving downslope toward the ocean into Kapoho Beach Lot, according to Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense Agency officials.

Wow at these aerial shots. That flow is pretty big and its moving much faster than I thought from ground shots of the a'a. Its quite a shot from the front lobe all the way back to the fountain of lava in the distance.

Kīlauea Message Sun, 03 Jun 2018 02:40:15 HST: UHH UAS thermal imaging flight indicates that lava is about 500 yards from Kapoho tidepools. Flow front is about 0.5 miles wide and extends from Kapoho Beach Road almost to Kapoho Kai Drive and down to Ililani Road.

That was fast. There's no escaping this flow because its so high, 20-30 feet.

BREAKING #LeilaniEstatesEruption #KilaueaVolcano UPDATE (June 3 at 8:30 AM):
The National Guard confirms Hawaiʻi County Firefighters have evacuated two men and one woman from the isolated area of Kapoho and Vacationland around 7:15 AM and successfully brought them to safety. I’m told no injuries were reported. *Please contact the Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense if you confirm that someone you know is remaining in the isolated area. Call 808-935-0031.* I also just received this new aerial footage from Dave Okita taken during the 7:30 AM flyover of the lower East Rift Zone that shows the leading edge of the lava flow about 430 yards from the ocean between Kapoho Beach Road and Kapoho Kai Drive. USGS HVO geologists say the flow front is about half a mile wide.

#LeilaniEstatesEruption #KilaueaVolcano UPDATE (June 3 at 7:30 AM):
These images were taken by Hawaiʻi Island Senator Kaialiʻi Kahele when he flew over the lower East Rift Zone last night. Right now, these are the most recent photos we have as we wait on new pictures or video from this morning. According to Senator Kahele, these images taken around 6:30 PM Saturday, June 2, capture residents still in Kapoho and Vacationland who were directed to go to Isaac Hale Beach Park in Pohoiki — a designated landing zone for evacuation. The Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense Agency confirms fissure 8 is feeding a large channelized flow traveling along Highway 132, the Pāhoa-Kapoho Road. Officials say lava has crossed Government Beach Road and Highway 137. The flow is moving downslope toward the ocean into Kapoho Beach Lots and as of early this morning had reached Kapoho Kai Road to the south and as far east as Iliani Road. *There have been multiple reports individuals are TRAPPED. Please contact Civil Defense if you confirm that someone you know is remaining in the isolated area. Call 808-935-0031.* USGS HVO geologists say as of the 7:30 AM overflight, lava was about 430 yards from the ocean between Kapoho Beach Road and Kapoho Kai Drive. They say the flow front is about half a mile wide.

So I guess a 30 ft high wall of lava bearing down on them wasnt enough to get them moving in a timely fashion. I hope they realize they cant take any of their toys they packed up and drove to the evac spot. I did notice the area residents were only "encouraged" to leave.

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY STATUS REPORT
U.S. Geological Survey
Sunday, June 3, 2018, 10:40 AM HST (Sunday, June 3, 2018, 20:40 UTC)

Kīlauea Volcano Lower East Rift Zone

Vigorous eruption of lava continues from the lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) fissure system in the area of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens.

Fissure 8 fountaining persisted throughout the night, and the channelized flow continued to deliver lava northeast along Highway 132 to the Kapoho area. Lava is advancing along a 0.5-mile-wide front towards the ocean at Kapoho Bay between Kapoho Beach Road and Kapoho Kai Drive. As of 7:30 AM HST, the lava flow was about 430 yards from the ocean. Other branches of the Fissure 8 lava flow were inactive.

All other fissures are inactive, although Fissure 9 is steaming heavily.

Kīlauea Volcano Summit

Earthquake activity at the summit was high overnight, and it is possible that a small explosion, much like those that have occurred during the past two weeks, will take place in the next day. Ash emissions are low as revealed by webcam views this morning. Volcanic gas emissions at the summit remain high.

Hawaii County Civil Defense has a Flickr account. They have a lot of great visuals and lots of aerial views. If you scroll down around May 30 or so you can see how big that lava river is. It looks like a glacial moraine. There are some pics of breakouts from the lava levees.

A “waterfall” of lava at Green Lake…Kapono, Hawaii.

No words for this ❤️ Mahalo @donhurzeler of @lavalightgalleries for capturing this unbelievable image of Wai a Pele at Puʻu Kapoho on Sunday, June 3, 2018. “This is a “waterfall” of lava pouring into Green Lake inside the Kapoho Crater on Green Mountain. The lake appears to be completely filled with lava and the lava fall is still pouring into it like a regular waterfall... amazing to witness,” captioned Don Hurzeler.

The lava source is still going strong tonight.

By the numbers - the fissure 8 fountain in Kīlauea Volcano’s lower East Rift Zone continues to reach heights of 230 ft . A smaller fountain nearby reaches heights of 120 ft. The curved mound around fissure 8 is made of chilled lava fragments from the fountain, and stands about 125 ft tall. The peak of the cone shifted northwest since yesterday, due to a wind change.

Sunday, June 3, 2018, 7:07 PM HST (Monday, June 4, 2018, 05:07 UTC)

Kīlauea Volcano Lower East Rift Zone

Vigorous eruption of lava continues from the lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) fissure system in the area of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens.

Fissure 8 fountaining persisted throughout the day to heights up to 220 feet, and the channelized flow continued to deliver lava northeast along Highway 132 to the Kapoho area. Lava is advancing along a 0.5-mile-wide front towards the ocean at Kapoho Bay between Kapoho Beach Road and Kapoho Kai Drive. As of 5:45 PM HST, the lava flow was about 245 yards from the ocean at its closest approach point. Other branches of the Fissure 8 lava flow were inactive.

All other fissures are inactive, although observers on the late afternoon overflight noted abundant gas emission from Fissures 9 & 10 and incandescence without fountaining at fissures 16 & 18.

Kīlauea Volcano Summit

Earthquake activity at the summit was high overnight and through the day. A moderate earthquake (5.5 preliminary) resulting from a volcanic explosion and continued collapse around Halemaumau occurred at 15:50 HST. National Weather Service radar observations confirmed an ash column was produced and reached 8,000 ft. asl.

Volcanic gas emissions at the summit remain high.

There are so many amazing images coming out of this event.

Clip from today's call

500 Earthquakes In 24 Hrs, Most Ever Recorded At Kilauea Summit (Jun. 3, 2018)

One of the geologists said the current thought is that the lack of quake activity in the East Rift Zone now may signify that the pathway of the lava flow is clear of obstacles, since the quakes are indicators of the earth cracking and distorting to accommodate the magma. That could explain why that one fissure is gushing so much.

This is actually a better source;

To say anyone who lives here saw this coming is an understatement.
