This is a Civil Defense Message for Thursday, May 17 at 6 o’clock in the evening.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) has reported a new fissure 21 down rift of Makamae Street in Leilani Estates. Several fissures have reactivated. HVO reports lava is pahoehoe, and flows have been generated.

#LeilaniEstatesEruption
UPDATE (May 17 at 10 PM): *SOUND UP* Major action as lava continues to sputter out of an extremely dynamic fissure 17 off of Halekamahina Loop Road, west of Highway 132 on the Kalapana side. It broke out on Saturday and has been the longest-lasting, most active fissure of the 21 that have opened up since this the first on May 3 along Mohala Street within #LeilaniEstates. However, in the last two days fissures 6 & 13 have both reactivated. Officials say the flow from fissure 17 appears to have stalled — but all fissures are de-gassing leading to extremely high sulfur dioxide levels across Puna. After re-assessing their count, officials are now saying 21 active lava fissures have opened in lower Puna — covering 325 acres and claiming nearly 40 structures, most of them homes within Leilani Estates. *WATCH my #InstaLIVE for more footage* Stay tuned to @HawaiiNewsNow for the very latest developments

That feed lost its signal so now here's another livestream but back on that fountaining one, #17. The other uploader said the lava flow was coming from Fissure 20.

Updated map. Red triangles are active fissures, look how many got re-energized and added to the new ones! There is another new one this morning, #22.

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE
U.S. Geological Survey
Friday, May 18, 2018, 8:52 AM HST (Friday, May 18, 2018, 18:52 UTC)

LOWER EAST RIFT ZONE

Moderate-level eruption of lava continues from multiple points along the central and northeast end of the active fissure system. Residents in lower Puna should remain informed and heed Hawaii County Civil Defense closures, warnings, and messages (http://www.hawaiicounty.gov/active-alerts)

Spattering continues from Fissures 15, 17, 18, 20, 21, and 22 with pahoehoe lava flows being erupted from Fissures 17, 18, and 20.

HVO field crews are on site tracking the lava flow and spattering from multiple fissures as conditions allow and reporting information to Hawaii County Civil Defense.

For the most recent map showing the locations of activity, please see https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/ki ... _maps.html These maps are updated as often as possible but may not reflect the most recent changes.

Volcanic gas emissions remain elevated throughout the area downwind of the vents. Weak winds today means that other areas of Hawaii Island may experience varying levels of vog. For forecast information, please see: http://mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu/vmap/hysplit/

For other information about vog, please see:https://vog.ivhhn.org/

This eruption is still evolving and additional outbreaks of lava are possible. Ground deformation continues and seismicity remains elevated in the area.

KILAUEA SUMMIT

No explosive eruption of ash have occurred since Thursday morning. Additional explosions possible at any time.

Seismic levels, which abruptly decreased after explosive eruptions on Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, are slowly increasing.

At this time, based on HVO web cameras, a robust plume of gas and steam is billowing out of the Overlook vent and drifting generally southwest.

The blue graph line is the tilt at the summit over the last week. Why the weird stepping? Earthquakes?

After steaming all day, the summit is starting to throw ash around again.

Image

I wonder if the inner crater got bigger from the previous eruptions because it seems like the base of these plumes is much larger than previous.

East Rift Zone Eruption - Update 4, 5/18/18 5PM - Lava Crosses Pohoiki, Officials Assessing Situation.
This is a Civil Defense Message for Friday, May 18 at 5 o’clock in the evening.

Fast moving lava has crossed Pohoiki Road near Malama Ki Place. Police, Fire and National Guard are being sent in to stop all entry on both sides of Pohoiki and secure the area. There are approximately 40 homes in the area that are isolated. Officials are gaining access by helicopter to the area to assess how many people are there and if they need assistance. All persons in that area are asked to stay where they are and wait for further instructions.

All persons are asked to stay clear of this emergency situation.

Edit 9:44

Compare whats burned since. A house was taken out in the back too. There's that channel of lava on the right coming down now.

I just realized I can cast this to my tv thru the Roku stick. :geek: At some point earlier right after dark, they make a pan across the entire lava field and its impressive how big it is.

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY STATUS REPORT
U.S. Geological Survey
Friday, May 18, 2018, 7:53 PM HST (Saturday, May 19, 2018, 05:53 UTC)

Kīlauea Volcano Lower East Rift Zone

Eruption of lava and ground cracking in the area of Leilani Estates subdivision continues. Late this afternoon, a fast-moving pahoehoe lava flow emerged from fissure 20 and traveled southeast where it crossed Pohoiki Road. Estimates from Hawaii County Fire Department aerial video at 6:30 pm indicate advance rate of 300-400 yards per hour; this rate may change with time and USGS crews are in the area to try and monitor flow advance. Other fissures remain weakly active and volcanic gas emissions remain elevated throughout the area downwind. Smoke from burning vegetation as lava flows advance is also contributing to poor air quality.

Special Weather Statement
National Weather Service Honolulu HI
110 AM HST Sat May 19 2018

HIZ024-191400-
South Big Island-
110 AM HST Sat May 19 2018

...LIGHT ASHFALL POSSIBLE FROM KILAUEA VOLCANO...

A relatively small and brief explosive eruption occurred at
approximately 1158 pm Friday with the ash cloud briefly reaching
to near 7000 feet. Hawaii Volcano Observatory reports that
additional explosions are possible at any time with little
warning. If this occurs, an Ashfall Advisory or Warning would
likely be necessary.

Occasional bursts of volcanic ash may continue to emanate from
Halemaumau Crater (19.4N 155.3W). These bursts may be brief and
could occur at multiple times. Low level winds would tend to push
any ash clouds toward the south and southwest. Most ash fallout
would remain mainly over rural areas and Highway 11 to the
southwest of the town of Volcano.

Ah the USGS website updated finally.

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY STATUS REPORT
U.S. Geological Survey
Saturday, May 19, 2018, 1:33 AM HST (Saturday, May 19, 2018, 11:33 UTC)

Kīlauea Volcano Summit

At 11:58 PM Local time, a short-lived explosion at from Halema'uma'u created an ash cloud that reached up to 10,000 ft asl and was carried southwest by the wind. Possible trace ash fall may have occurred along Highway 11.

Additional explosive events that could produce minor amounts of ashfall downwind are possible at any time. Volcanic gas emissions at the summit remain high.

For forecasts of where ash would fall if such an explosion occur, please consult the Ash3D model output here: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatorie ... _2018.html

Information on ash hazards and how to prepare for ashfall maybe found here: http://www.ivhhn.org/information#ash

Kīlauea Volcano Lower East Rift Zone

Eruption of lava and ground cracking in the area of Leilani Estates subdivision continues. A fast-moving pahoehoe lava flow that emerged from fissure 20 this afternoon continues to flow southeast. The flow has three main lobes. The easternmost is east of Pohoiki Road and is moving about 230 yards per hour. The westernmost of the lobes is near Malamaki Road and is moving at about 40 yards per hour. These rates may change with time and USGS crews are in the area to monitor flow advance. Other fissures remain weakly active and volcanic gas emissions remain elevated throughout the area downwind. Smoke from burning vegetation as lava flows advance is also contributing to poor air quality.
