Big Island in August

shot from the top of mauna kea (~14k feet above sea level),
some tips for those inspired: note you do not need 4x4! Signs and warnings every where about it. 2wd rental will work as long as the road is in good shape, test rental's brakes and low gear before attempting. Photo session went from sunset straight to night shots. Ignore the ranger whom will try to kick you out and scare you after the sun has set. It gets very very cold. I had checked bag carrying my winter gear. Temps around 10pm was in the low 30s. Camera will suffer from condensation due to temp fluctuation as you go from 14k to sea level (it will get wet if you use cheap gear, otherwise know how to mitigate the temp changes over time). Theres no where on earth where I can surf 81 degree water then bomb it up to 14k in 2hours.

look to the left on the hill you can notice the VOG ( big island version of smog due to volcanic activity), on other islands seeing the milky way with your eyes is easy but not on the big island

Akaka Falls State Park, near Hilo
exposure of around 15 seconds, had to work with a fence (for good reason) made getting desired composition difficult

Milky Way paparazzi, how do you get the longer exposures without the star movement streaking over the longer times?

There's a rule of thumb that says divide 500 by the focal length to get the maximum exposure without noticeable star trails. So at 24mm I can shoot a 20 second exposure.

That said for this shot I used my new toy which is basically an equatorial mount that exactly compensates for the rotation of the earth. No star trails but the foreground will blur with a long enough exposure. Using the tracker I shot that image at 30 seconds @ f2 ISO 1600.

In this example of the Milky Way over Convict Lake I shot a 6 minute exposure and you can see how badly the foreground is blurred:
