I found out this week that the mountain officially does not allow uphill skiing. That's sad to hear especially considering the increase in popularity of the sport and the fact that over 70% of major resorts allow it. The most ironic part of the whole thing is that Mammoth sits right in the middle of the best backcountry skiing area in the U.S. From a pure business stance I can't understand why the mountain would not embrace the backcountry community instead of shunning them.

I often go uphilling alone and heading out in the backcountry by yourself is not a very good idea. I spent two weeks last winter in Steamboat and Aspen, skiing uphill almost everyday. There was a great group of people at every resort I went to, the resort had designated routes to take and you had to get an arm band from ski patrol and wear it so they could easily tell you knew the rules of where to go, what to look out for etc.

I'd love to gain a better understanding of why this policy is in place.

Cheers

You do not access the BC from the ski area, feel free to ski up over in the real BC... :o
