So, I got this email from Mammoth today:

"Forget traffic and chaining up on I-80, just hop on a flight from SFO or SJC and arrive in Mammoth in less than 70 minutes! With daily flights from San Jose and San Francisco, you can spend more time on the slopes than in the car. And now you can get here for an even better price! For a limited time, flights on Alaska/Horizon Air out of San Jose are as low as $29* each way when you fly on Tuesdays or Wednesdays! Flights out of SFO start as low as $59* on United. We have received record early season snowfall, with over 300" (26 FEET+) this season to date, so we have got prime winter conditions. Spend your vacation at the Top of California."

A - Obviously linked to my old Sacramento address.
B - Even when I did live in Sacramento, I never drove I-80 to get to Mammoth. Who drives through North Tahoe to go to Mammoth (unless you're stopping at one of the resorts there)?
C - Even if I did still live in Sacramento, I wouldn't drive 90 minutes west to SFO (or two hours to SJC) to arrive at least an hour before an hour flight, when I could drive to Mammoth in less time. So actually in this case, no, I would not spend more time on the slopes than in the car by flying.

So, my conclusion is that this email was either:
1 - written by someone who has never driven from Northern California to Mammoth. And hasn't looked at a map.
2 - written for people who typically drive from the Bay Area to Squaw (hence, "forget traffic and chaining up"), but the copy isn't completely clear that the message is to deter people from skiing the North Tahoe resorts.

I vote #1.

Nice segmenting though! :)

I think its targeted towards the Bay Area metro area**. Once when my friend drove from there to meet me skiing in Mammoth, it took her about 9 hours and she said "Never again" and she didnt.

**Nobody important lives in Sacramento. :P

Yeah, my point is that regardless if you're coming from the Bay or Sac, you still don't drive 80 to get to Mammoth. It's 50 or 88.

Actually my friend did have to take the 80, because that was the May storm in 1995 and the other roads were bad. I just remember the 50 not being so great when it was snowing because of the twists and avalanche control.

That is a reference to driving up 80 to get to Tahoe, not Mammoth.
