That is because they are all on crank! They used to be on coke (110) and now they are on crank (220).

Let me tell you what and why. Mammoth is in the high desert and that is why it is warmer than most other places. It is also in the middle of Cali where the big Pacific storms get sucked through when they happen. Mammoth always gets more snow than the surrounding areas, and that is why Dave chose to build there.

Some of the best tree skiing I have ever done was on Mammoth. Some of the best skiing I have ever done, period, is on Mammoth Mtn.

They were wrong about the man to woman ratio. There are 10 guys to every girl. Most of them are losers, so it is doubtful to find a good one.

Mammoth has a bad reputation in the other towns. It is the young, selfish punks that always ruin it for everyone else. They act like nobody else is around. Being from Mammoth is not necessarily a good thing to be.

Don't listen to this guy. LSD fried his mind long ago.

I guess rather than packing up my life, I will just have to visit the area. I know there will be some things I won't like about the area... like sales tax and higher than average prices on gas, etc... but to be able to ski an extra few months per year would be worth it!!

There are definitely trade offs involved but there usually is when you want to follow your passion. You could definitely do worse than Mammoth and the Eastern Sierra.

You should visit Hawaii instead and learn to surf.

I don't know about that... I prefer 2 boards instead of one...

The season lasts a LONG time in Mammoth. About 10 years ago the mountain opened on Oct 21st and closed on July 4th. In general the mountain opens around the 10th of November and closes on Memorial Day or later. Average snowfall is over 30 feet per season. It's generally not as cold as Montana. .

wow was it really 10 years ago we opened Oct 21. I still remember although 2 years ago was pretty good with snow. Cost me a ton extra in snow removal.

^^^ I'm pretty sure it was 9 years ago...Oct 2004. Halloween was my 10th day of the season that year. One thing that made it even better was that the town was empty and so was the hill. Nothing like straight-lining down Stump Alley from the backside of 3 without worrying about anyone else being on the run.

Really? So are you admitting that you are a scud missile and don't make turns SnS? I always laugh at people that try and go as fast as they can down Stump. I love to watch the really good skiers and riders carve big carving turns down the run though.

Only when it's empty. Nothing wrong with nice carving turns but when the opportunity to straightline safely presents itself I take it.

Others like to take it a lot slower.

Completely. I might even have some pics. I was the only one on the chair and the only one on the run. Never happened before or since.

I remember riding up the chair thinking "This is as close to having m own private ski resort as I'll ever get!" :D

I'll have to verify but I believe this pic was taken the same week. Notice you can see two people on the run.

Nice...

I got first tracks down Stump once on a powder day. That was pretty awesome. I might have even straight lined it. Haha..

Another photo of the crowds I had to contend with that day:

Another thing that made it unique was the lack of inexperienced skiers and boarders.
