BY TIMES STAFF REPORT
wendilyn@mammothtimes.com
The Glacier Point Road in Yosemite National Park will open for the season to automobile traffic tomorrow, Saturday, March 28, 2015, at 6:00 a.m. All visitor services at Glacier Point will be fully operational. The Bridalveil Creek Campground will open within the next several weeks.

Visitors are urged to drive slowly and with caution, as wildlife may be present on or near the roadway.

The Tioga Road, the popular east-west crossing of the Sierra Nevada in the northern portion of Yosemite, remains closed at this time. Currently, there is no anticipated opening date for the Tioga Road.

For up to date, 24 hour road and weather information, please call 209-372-0200.

Plowing will begin, assuming the road hasn't melted out already...

^ Yes, one has to assume that, but then again that pass sit at 10K. There are usually a lot of shady spots in the twisty road plus they have to clear any debris like rocks/trees and make necessary road repairs. YNP also needs to get the water system up and running and staff up earlier than usual.

Always plenty of rocks.

I'm wondering if they will get Reds Meadow road open in time for the fishing opener - that would be a first and the San Joaquin River will dry up early this year. It was pitiful last year in the late summer/fall.

^ Re: the Reds Road opening by fishing opener, that seems unlikely. I just read somewhere they are shooting for prior to Memorial weekend.

As for Sonora Pass and Tioga Pass, this info is on the Mono County Tourism FB page:

https://www.facebook.com/VisitEasternSi ... =1&fref=nf

Quote:
Sonora Pass, Hwy 108, will tentatively be opening this Friday, April 17, 2015 at noon! (Pending weather conditions)

The lower section of Tioga Pass, Hwy 120 west, will be opening from Lee Vining to the park entrance tomorrow April 15, 2015 by 5pm. Tioga Pass will remain closed from the park entrance into Yosemite National Park until further notice, however plowing and debris cleanup is scheduled to start tomorrow morning!

Weather conditions can change rapidly in the Eastern Sierra. Always check road conditions before leaving for your trip on the Caltrans website here: http://bit.ly/1A0oSeN or by calling 1-800-427-7623.

Word on the street is that Tioga might open on 5/1 barring any new snow.

Hmmm, doesn't look like Tioga is going to open tomorrow after all. Mammoth Times FB page note stated that YNP would be putting out a press release about it tomorrow.

When we drove past 120 this afternoon on our way home from Carson City we saw large Caltrans trucks hauling huge boulders. The lower section of 120W was closed today to clean up some major boulders in the road from rock fall the other day so maybe they didn't get it finished? I guess we'll know in the morning.

Beware -
Hanford Disc this AM-
Tioga Pass is open and snow criteria is lowered after may
first for advisory criteria. We will go out with a Winter Weather
Advisory for snow above 6000 feet from Thursday afternoon through
Friday evening. Snow will be convective and some areas may get
more than others. However after collaboration with our partners at
Yosemite National Park...any snow on Tioga Pass will cause it to
shut down and it that will have a high impact on mountain
travelers.

^ But of course! The pass opened just in time for it to snow and close again...temporarily. ;)

All three passes (89, 108, 120) are temporarily closed again due to the impending storm. My guess is they might reopen by Saturday or Sunday.

Dark clouds are rolling in over MM now...get ready for a little spring white! It's already snowing up in Walker!!

Tioga Pass reopened at noon today, although Caltrans has not updated their website yet. Haven't heard about Sonora Pass.
