Not only were the snow and rainfall totals impressive but it was also the coldest May day on record in many places.

I'll say. I was sitting freezing my butt off in the pouring rain in Temecula watch kids soccer games. Car temp was showing 51 degrees.

^^^That would be my guess, until it hits the sea breeze.
SGX - "This low produced impressive afternoon
convection over the northern Gulf of California this afternoon. The
low will drift northeast over Arizona Tuesday morning, and wrap
around moisture, instability, and upslope flow over the mountains
will bring a chances for showers and thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon
through Tuesday night. Also, a surface convergence boundary sets up
over the mountains with the afternoon sea breeze colliding with the
easterly winds around the low. The sea breeze overpowers the weaker
easterly flow, forcing the convergence boundary eastward over the
deserts through early evening, so the best chance for showers will
be over the mtns and deserts."

Mind you it's a slow wobble.

I'm always fascinated at how long these circulations can persist in the atmosphere, but then Jupiter's have been around for centuries.

Once a week? The GFS likes regressing the H to the west allowing cold systems to slide down the coast. That first one is really cold even by Winter standards. Heatwave, schmeatwave.
