Joyful June Mtn. received .98" of rain in last 12 hours...majority of rain during 2-3 hour period.
That must of swelled up some stream banks cashing in on the runoff.

Appears zero measurable in Merry Mammoth.

"With the strong afternoon heating each day, cannot rule out isolated thunderstorms over the
highest elevations of the Sierra during the late afternoon and
evening hours through Thursday."

It's 65° in Del Mar and 120° in Palm Springs. What an incredible difference in such a relatively short distance!

Even closer, Oceanside and Palm Springs, same temp. difference and only 65 miles. But even shorter, what is Palm Springs and up at the tram on San Jacinto? Edit: its 72F at 8500 ft.

Rule of thumb the tram advertises or used to advertise saying its a 40 degree difference at the top of the tram vs. the bottom.

How has the Bay weather been?

Unusually cool, but Sunday was really awful, 100 F HeRe but at inland spots around the Bay it was 105! I think SFO got up to 90 F and thats right on the water. I think it was hotter up here than in metro LA.

I'm still wondering when the Central Valley is getting flooded.

I've always gone by the "Rule of Thumb" of 5 degrees cooler for every thousand feet of elevation.

I thought adiabatic cooling was 3 degrees/1000 ft?

More wild temp. gradients

.DISCUSSION...as of 01:51 PM PDT Wednesday...Another hot day
around the Bay Area with the exception of the coast and Bay
Shoreline. The pesky marine layer is still lingering along the
coast and much like yesterday is keeping the coast significantly
cooler. There are some rather impressive temperature gradients
around the region, which makes this area unique and challenging to
forecast the weather. For instance, the Big Sur Coast is in the
upper 50s along the Hwy 1 and 92 degrees at Anderson Peak a mere
two miles away.
That particular gradient is on the extreme side,
but other locations around the Bay Area vary greatly over a short distance.

this particular heat wave has been strange

santa ana has been relatively cool throughout

it's been much hotter in irvine

it's not always that way, but this time around, santa ana appears to be benefiting from that pacific ocean affect.

Depends on whether the air is dry or moist:

While the dry adiabatic lapse rate is a constant 9.8 °C/km (5.38 °F per 1,000 ft, 3 °C/1,000 ft), the moist adiabatic lapse rate varies strongly with temperature. A typical value is around 5 °C/km, (9 °F/km, 2.7 °F/1,000 ft, 1.5 °C/1,000 ft).[12

It hit 87.8 here at our place today. I was melting after running a few errands in my non-air conditioned Mighty Honda. Now we have some massive thunderclouds and it got dark. Lightning strikes already, but no rain here. Cooled down to 82...ha!
