Really looking forward to that, it should be up and running by next winter.
Last fall I was disappointed that we wouldn't have one for this winter but I guess we didn't really miss out, turns out there was nothing to see.

Dont we actually start seeing images before its "official"? It should be transmitting by Summer. When there's nothing to see. Maybe we'll get some tstorm action.

Yes they make "preliminary" data available before switching it to operational mode which makes it official.

It should provide beautiful images of Eastern Pacific hurricanes this summer.

GOES-17 is still on track for launch on Thursday. The rocket should be rolled out to the launch pad tomorrow. A SpaceX launch was delayed out of concern that it could damage the rocket and/or satellite as it sits on the pad.

So far this has been a flawless launch. Still lots more tasks to complete before it's parked in the right spot though.

Really fascinating article about the ability of the various sensors on the satellite - lots more than I realized!

Doh!
I was just watching a live recording of the attempt to get the lightning mapper online before it was even in its spot for testing.
That didnt come online right first time either but GOESW isnt a lightning hotspot region. Shoulda waited to get the cooling sorted first.

Can we interest you in a trade? We'll trade you our new hardly used -17 for your older -16 model with a bunch of miles on it already. Ours still has that new satellite smell. If you're not happy with it we can always trade back (provided it is still in working order with the original tags still attached)

More details. Sounds pretty serious as far as IR goes.
